get with the times..

Just recently I was told to ‘Get with the times’!
This seems to be a popular forward thinking ‘modern’ motto, but it’s so unbecoming of human characteristics. In actuality it’s usually a lazy person’s retort towards someone who reminds them of the effort required to make choices with integrity.

I’ll paraphrase from some words of Chesterton that come to mind.
‘You can live your life like a stick floating on water, that travels wherever the wave moves it;
or you can choose to swim on your own journey..'
Sometimes the travel might be against the waves and sometimes with it, but never be swayed to choose because of the popular opinion. Only a lifeless thing floats with the tide of popularity. Make the effort to choose your path with integrity.

I looked up the quote and it goes: “ A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.” .. I guess he wasn’t with the times either when he penned that in 1925. Incidentally ‘Chesterton’ is a very good read for all times.
